ANOPHTHALMIA E MICROPHTHALMIA: WHAT ARE THEY?

The anophthalmia and microphthalmia are characterised, respectively, by the absence of an eye and a presence of a smaller eye inside the orbit. The condition of a complete absence of an eye globe is very rare: usually, globe residues or underdeveloped bulb forms with no seeing function can be found inside the eye socket.

Anophthalmia and Microphthalmia represent malformations of the eye development, often associated with complex syndromes which also affect other systems.

As far as these malformations are concerned (grouped under the term MAC: Anophthalmia, Microphthalmia, Coloboma) it is maintained that two cases out of three are of genetic nature and are therefore inborn or, in other words, present since birth.

In these pathological contexts, a child is functionally blind (to one or both eyes); however, in addition to the antomical-functional damage, there is also the disparity of the gaze, an essential element of expression in human relations.

To ensure a better development of the eye socket and the surrounding facial structures, and to improve the proportions of the face, it is recommended to insert an expander or conformer: it allows a more symmetrical development of the child’s facial bones which, in adult age, may facilitate the use of a prosthetic eye.

Each patient, together with his/her parents, will be guided and advised on the most appropriate and advanced surgical practices, in compliance with the latest guidelines of international surgical associations. The child lives the surgical experience with serenity, followed in each step of they way by an expert team with pediatric experience and high level professional skills.

CAN I UNDERGO THE OPERATION?

The insertion of the conformer is recommended for all children affected by MAC syndrome who have been diagnosed with Anophthalmia/Microphthalmia under narcosis without a possibility of sight recovery.

An early operation will stimulate growth of both bone structure and soft tissues (eyelids and conjunctiva), ensuring an excellent aesthetic result.

WHAT DOES THE TREATMENT OF ANOPHTHALMIA E MICROPHTHALMIA CONSIST OF?

  • The treatment of the inborn anophthalmia and microphthalmia consists in fitting conformers into the eye socket within the early orbital rehabilitation program.
  • The prosthetic system is periodically changed, in consideration of the rapid growth of the child and its bone structure.
  • The progressive increase of the size of the conformer maintains the form and structure of the socket, making it suitable for future prosthetic eye in the adult age, aesthetically quite similar to the other eye in look and movement.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT? WHAT ARE THE RESULTS AFTER THE TREATMENT OF ANOPHTHALMIA E MICROPHTHALMIA?

  • The child is periodically checked after the fitting of the prostheses: the surgeon estimates its tolerance on microphthalmic eye, inspecting with care the cornea of the small eye and the conjunctiva by removing the prosthetic eye.
  • In case of congenital anophthalmia, customized prostheses is utilized for every child, which must be substituted every 15 days in the first two months of life. For the following six months it will be sufficient to substitute the prostheses once a month.
  • In the following period a suitable rehabilitation program will be adapted to every clinical case in a personalized way.
